Solar O&M

We cover all Operation and Maintenance (O&M) services! A full range of maintenance services will keep commercial and industrial solar systems operating safely, efficiently, and in line with insurance requirements.

O&M service list

Routine cleaning of solar panels is essential to maintain maximum sunlight absorption and energy output. Dirt, dust, bird droppings, and pollution can all reduce performance if left unchecked.

We carry out Preventative Maintenance (PM) and Annual Preventative Maintenance (APM) inspections to identify potential issues before they become serious problems.

These inspections include checks for:

  • Visual inspection of panels and mounting systems
Checking for damage, movement, shading issues, or signs of wear.

  • Electrical and safety checks
Inspecting cables, connections, inverters, isolators, and protection devices for faults or deterioration.

  • Thermal imaging survey
Identifying overheating panels, connectors, or components that could cause performance loss or failure.

  • Performance and system health review
Comparing actual generation against expected output to identify underperformance or anomalies.

  • Detailed inspection report
A clear report including photos, test results, findings, and recommendations for any corrective actions.

If your system is underperforming, offline or has experienced storm damage, we can attend site to diagnose and fix the issue.

If we haven’t previously carried out the APM, or if the fault is more complex, a site survey may be required before repairs are completed. We will always discuss and agree this with you before proceeding.

Just like with an MOT, some items may be recommended as best practice, while others may be more urgent and require prompt attention. You are free to decide which items you would like us to price up and carry out.

Need your system back online urgently? We offer emergency call-outs, including weekend availability, to minimise downtime and financial loss.

We help you stay on top of your system’s performance using monitoring platforms provided by the installer or manufacturer. A sudden drop in output often indicates a fault that needs prompt attention, and we can investigate this for you.

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for a solar farm is a detailed periodic inspection and testing of the fixed electrical components of a photovoltaic (PV) system, carried out to confirm safety, regulatory compliance (including BS 7671 in the UK), and ongoing operational performance.

An EICR is required every three years. For many of our clients, we combine this with a PM inspection to keep everything efficient and minimise disruption.

If you need an independent review of a new installation, or you’ve recently purchased a portfolio of solar sites, we can carry out a full site survey and produce a detailed snag list.
These reports are useful for:

  • Insurance purposes
  • Identifying installation defects
  • Planning future maintenance and repair works

We assess and manage nearby trees and foliage that may block sunlight from reaching your panels, helping to maximise generation and prevent long-term shading issues.

We check that all electrical components and connections are properly weatherproofed to protect against water ingress and weather-related damage.

Bird deterrent systems can be installed where bird activity is causing fouling or damage. This is particularly beneficial for coastal sites or areas with high bird populations.

For ground-mounted and agricultural solar sites, we offer solutions to protect equipment from wildlife and grazing livestock. This is especially useful where sheep grazing is planned within the solar farm.

We carry out perimeter inspections to help identify fencing, access, or security issues that could impact safety, compliance, or system tampering.

What should I do if my solar needs fixing urgently?

We can help, you don’t have to have a contract already. We can provide a clear quote and arrange a visit to conduct any corrective maintenance.

How often do solar panels need maintenance?

How often your solar panels need maintenance depends on a few factors, such as where your solar PV systems are located, local weather conditions, and even the angle of your panels. Most importantly, your insurance provider will usually require regular inspections to be carried out and properly recorded. These inspections are known as Preventative Maintenance (PM).

What Is Preventative Maintenance (PM)?

Preventative Maintenance is a routine health check for your solar system. In most cases, this must be completed at least once a year as an Annual Preventative Maintenance (APM). Some systems, depending on size, usage, or insurance requirements, may need inspections as often as once per quarter.

A helpful way to think about this is like a vehicle MOT, but with more technical detail and documentation.

What’s included in a Solar PM inspection?

After a PM visit, you should expect a clear and detailed report, which typically includes:

  • Thermal imaging to check for overheating or faults
  • Electrical test results
  • Photographs of the system and key components
  • Notes on the overall condition of the installation
  • EICRs (if current report is out of date)
  • We also include a drone survey with aerial images of the site. Not all providers offer this, but it is especially useful if roof access isn’t possible on the day of the visit.

The report will also highlight any issues that need further investigation or repairs, which may require Corrective Maintenance (CM) to be carried out at a later date.

If anything in the report isn’t clear, we’re always happy to talk it through with you by phone or email.

How much is a PM Inspection for solar?

We charge from £450 ex VAT for a basic, one-day PM inspection. However, please note this is our base price for a one day inspection and doesn’t include mileage for our operative or any add-ons.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I clean and maintain my own solar?

You can absolutely keep an eye on your system visually, look at your monitoring system regularly and maintain the land/roof around the system. It’s important to note that professional cleaners and equipment is needed on solar panels to ensure the panels aren’t damaged and perform up to peak capacity. And any electrical maintenance needs to be done by a professional. If you notice anything visually that doesn't look right, give us a call and we can always do our best to help remotely or come and take a look ourselves.

One common misconception about solar panels is that they are entirely maintenance-free. While they are incredibly durable and require minimal attention, routine maintenance is still necessary to maximize their performance and extend their lifespan. Solar panels on solar farms and rooftops are exposed to various environmental elements, such as dust, debris, bird droppings, and weather conditions, which can impact their efficiency over time.
